Club Weightlifting /Sports Power Coach 1 Licence: Accreditation Program

This accreditation course is jointly brought to you by the Australian Weightlifting Federation and Singapore Weightlifting Federation and is suitable for anyone interested in instructing athletes in the techniques of Weightlifting and Power Training.

The course will cover programming principles; coaching methodology; principles of power development; progressive resistance principles; exercises to develop technique and power; warm-up and stretching techniques; basic lifting techniques; progressive development of technique; safety principles.

At the completion of this Training Program, coaches will be able to:

  • Plan, organise and conduct safe, enjoyable and progressive training and competition programs for athletes engaged in power training.
  • Improve the skill levels of athletes commensurate with the athlete’s aspirations and subsequent enjoyment of involvement with power training.

More specifically

  • Teach and correct basic power training and weightlifting skills of athletes and ensure each athlete has the opportunity for optimal learning, development and performance
  • Write training programs that will incorporate appropriate skill learning, specific fitness and tactical development as they relate to the relevant participation level of the respective athlete.
  • Monitor and review power training activities by closely observing athlete performances, providing appropriate feedback on such performances and adjusting activities to suit needs.
  • Evaluate achievement of the objectives of the training/competition event and the effectiveness of their own coaching behaviours.
  • Adapt situations by identifying and implementing the appropriate modifications to future training sessions and competitions.

About the Lecturer

Michael Keelan possess an excellent knowledge and understanding of coach education and development, having successfully worked in coach education and sports development at local, state and national levels.

  • National Weightlifting Licence Coach – NCAS;

  • Level 2 NCAS Strength and Conditioning Coach;
  • Personal coach of two Weightlifting Olympians – Amanda Phillips (6th place Sydney 2000) and Deborah Lovely (12th place Athens 2004)
  • Australian Institute of Sport Weightlifting Coach 1983 – 1986;
  • Australian Coach at the World Weightlifting Championships in 1985, 1986, 1999, 2001 and 2002;
  • Queensland Weightlifting Association Head Coach 1983 – 1993 and 1997 – 2002;
  • Bronco’s Rugby League Football Club (P/T) Strength and Conditioning coach 1989 – 1993;

Certified Fitness Trainer Workshop

The Certified Fitness Trainer Workshop is designed to supplement ISSA’s Certified Fitness Trainer course. This workshop covers certain specific topics in the course textbook in greater detail and is supplemented with a practical overview. This workshop is ideal for people looking to get CFT certified but may not have sufficient prior practical experience in a gym setting.

This workshop will not substitute actually studying the course text book to complete the ISSA exams.

About the Facilitator

Irving Henson is Network Director and Founder of Pro-fit Personal Training Network, Irving has been providing fitness services in the industry since 1999. A jovial, outspoken, what-you-see-is-what-you-get kind of guy, he was one of the top trainers in one of the mega gyms and set out to set up Pro-Fit Personal Training Network in 2003. Together with his established associates and affiliates, Pro-fit has been providing Singaporeans with top-of-the line fitness, yoga and martial arts instruction.

His love for Vale Tudo ("Anything goes" style martial arts) and strength training brought about his innate fascination on the study of human movement. His training principle is to "Train movement. Not just muscles. Everyone is like a machine. Our body parts work together as an integrated unit. NEVER individually."

 Irving is a also a regular contributor of fitness articles to various magazines and publications. He also helps the health industry by giving lectures to student fitness professionals in Singapore.

Wesley Chow has been in the fitness industry since 2003, Wesley’s interest is in the specialized and dynamic, fast-growing field of sports fitness. His range of qualifications is testimony to his passion. Not only is he a personal trainer certified with the Federation International of Sports Aerobics & Fitness, he successfully completed the Reebok University Core Training workshop, as well as a Sports Trainer course with Sports Medicine Australia. To top it all, Wesley has a Bachelor’s degree in Sports Science from the renowned Edith Cowan University in Australia.

ICE - Integrated Corrective Exercise

The Integrated Corrective Exercise or ICE program provides the participant with a unique insight into the relationship between exercise, movement and musculoskeletal injury. The focus of the program includes a combination of theoretical and practical strategies to assist the health and fitness professional assess musculoskeletal function, apply corrective exercise strategies and select and plan exercise appropriate to the individuals needs.

The workshop series explores the grey area between clinical therapy and performance exercise which is crucial for the progressive physical health and safety of the client. Exercise is a valuable tool in developing efficient locomotion of the musculoskeletal system, the ICE program assists you to establish practical strategies to maximise physical performance and minimise the risk of musculoskeletal injury.
