This course will cover how to treat TMJ dysfunction and assess the relationship between cervical spine problems, headaches and the jaw.

“After this course I was surprised how many of my clients with neck pain and headaches also had TMJ symptoms. I found that I was much more effective at treating neck pain and headaches when I assessed and treated the TMJ” - Sydney Physiotherapist, Course Participant.

Tempormandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction and associated problems of the craniomandibular region affects up to 60% of the general population. Manual therapy, active exercises and postural correction has been shown to be effective in treating the TMJ and reducing muscle tension.

Do you feel that you have the skills to assess and treat this area? Many of the challenging neck pains and headaches that we see clinically are often related to TMJ disorders. This comprehensive workshop will review the functional anatomy of the temporo-mandibular joint and cover manual therapy techniques to assess and treat TMJ disorders. Typical presentations of craniomandibular disorders seen clinically will also be addressed. These techniques are well suited to a physiotherapy or osteopathic approach.

An introduction to cranial techniques and how these can be a useful adjunct in treating headaches and neck pain will be covered.

About the Lecturer

Penny Elliott, M.H.Sc. (Orthopaedic Manipulative Therapy), Member AAOMT, B. App.Sc (Phty), Physiotherapist, Member of the Australian Physiotherapy Assoc.

Penny is a senior associate of the Physiotherapy Posture and Fitness Clinic and combines her clinical work with lecturing and taking classes. She completed her master’s degree in orthopaedic manipulative therapy at Charles Sturt University in 2006. Teaching at the University of Sydney’s School of Dentistry encouraged her further study on the TMJ during her master’s degree. In her clinical work she liaises regularly with dentists, prosthodontists and orthodontists.

Penny has spent several years in the development of a number of education programs for health professionals both nationally and internationally.

Additionally, Penny’s hands on and exercise based approach to treatment means that patients can really understand their problem and take an active part in managing their own health and fitness. When not in clinic, Penny will be found in all manner of activities, including Pilates, spinning, swimming, yoga and being a mum.

A MUSCLE ASSESSMENT AND RELAXATION TECHNIQUE USING TOM BOWEN’S PRINCIPLES.

SIMPLE AND EASY TO LEARN . . . GENTLE TO APPLY . . . NON-INVASIVE Learn the basics of Tom Bowen’s therapy over three days. NO pre-requisites necessary.

TOM BOWEN’S THERAPY 101 is a muscle relaxation technique used to balance the body and reduce discomfort. This is achieved by applying small rolling moves over muscles and connective tissue. Muscle tension is released and thus brings the body to a relaxed state.

TOM BOWEN’S THERAPY 101 is being taught over 3 days and is offered to qualified practitioners to use as an effective assessment and relaxation tool and to the general public to assist family and friends.

TOM BOWEN’S THERAPY 101 can be used in conjunction with many current training methods.

TOM BOWEN’S THERAPY 101 is offered to you by highly qualified Bowen instructors under the direction of Ross Emmett and with the support of Romney Smeeton. Ross Emmett is the developer and founder of the Emmett Technique and a former Senior Bowen Instructor with Bowtech Australia. Romney Smeeton is a prominent Chiropractor in Geelong Victoria, who spent 5 years working and training under Tom Bowen. Romney has been in continuous practice since then using Tom’s technique and principles.

This course is further extended with Tom Bowen’s Therapy 101 - Professional Approach.

Developed by Paul Chek, the pioneer of Swiss Ball training for athletes, this course will teach you how to use this excellent tool to improve balance, posture and dynamic strength, plus train righting and tilting reactions. Used in rehabilitation since the 1960’s, Swiss balls are now becoming popular in training environments. There are literally hundreds of uses beyond performing a crunch over the ball! However, as with any training tool correct usage is essential to achieve the results you are seeking. In this comprehensive, highly practical course the personal trainer, athlete, athletic trainer and/or strength coach will learn:

The science behind the application of Swiss balls.

How to choose the correct size of Swiss ball for optimum training.

Stretching techniques

Beginner to advanced level exercises for the upper and lower back, abdominals, shoulder girdle, gluteals, hip musculature and lower limbs are included. The exercises cover the entire spectrum of intensity and complexity from the novice exerciser to those appropriate for elite athletes.

Well explained precautions for orthopedic conditions.

As a teacher or coach, have you ever wondered what to do immediately when an injury happens to your athlete or how can you decide whether your athlete can return to to his/her sport after the injury? Then this workshop is for you. It is common knowledge that with any sports, there is always a risk of injury. At the same time, performance and enjoyment of any sports can be marred by an injury. Knowing what to do when an injury happens can be crucial to better recovery and eventual return to the sport.

With our youths getting more involved in competitive sports and with our school sports scene getting more competitive, it is advisable for us, as coaches and teachers, to learn more about properly managing their injuries to maximise the athlete’s potential contribution to the sport and encourage the athletes to continue the sport as a form of an active lifestyle. Improper initial management has been known to be the biggest cause of an athlete staying on the sideline for a long time. It’s always frustrating when we are not able to select our best athlete or team due to these injuries.

When an injury has been managed quickly and appropriately, it promotes better recovery and a safe return to sports. In addition, preventive management like sports taping and rehabilitative exercises helps to lower the risk of a recurrent injury.

In this module, we will revise basic principles and learn intermediate principles of sports injury prevention and management. These include management concepts such as TOTAPS assessment, R.I.C.E.R, H.A.R.M as well as preventive exercises and sports taping for the shoulder, wrist, thumb, fingers, knee and ankle. Quick assessment tips for common injuries would also be shared. At the end of this module, participants will be able to:

Appreciate the principles of sports injury management

Appreciate the principles of sports injury prevention and rehabilitation

Appreciate the role of sports taping in prevention and rehabilitation of sports injury

Demonstrate an assessment of a sports injury

Demonstrate proficiency in using an injury record form

Demonstrate proficiency in sports taping

Course Duration: 8 hours (2 sessions of 4 hours each).

A Trainer’s Guide to Developing Speed and Power

Power output is an essential skill for clients of all types. For the athlete, or weekend warrior, it is necessary to help improve sports performance, but is also essential in injury prevention. Power is also one of the first physical abilities that disappears with ageing, making it a fundamental training component for any anti-ageing, or fitness training program.

This 2-day Power Trainer Course is for Certified Personal Trainers and Coaches who wish to expand their knowledge and skills in helping clients improve Speed and Power output while using the traditional equipment generally available to them at Fitness Centres.

This course is broken down into a number of lectures and practical training workshops and will cover topics such as:

The Scientific Foundations of Power

Practical Methods for Testing Power Output

Olympic Weightlifting Progressions for clients of all ages and fitness levels

Plyometrics Training Principles and Exercises

Medicine Ball Training for Developing Speed and Power

Planning Power Training Programs

By the end of this course, you will understand how to assess your clients’ power output, or lack of it, and to improve speed and power by progressively building from traditional weight training exercises to dynamic power training exercises while using equipment that is generally available in any commercial gym. This in turn will provide you with an extended database of knowledge and exercises that will keep your clients motivated, stimulated, and adapting, for years to come.

Many popular exercise programs contribute to postural and muscle imbalances by strengthening already tight muscles and stretching muscles that are already weak and over lengthened. An appropriately designed training program can prevent some of these muscle imbalances from occurring. However, exercise alone may not be sufficient to correct many of these muscle imbalances.

The use of myofascial and soft tissue massage techniques is helpful for reducing tightness and pain in soft tissues. Myofascial techniques can assist the client in achieving their goals, whether they are training to improve their performance or undergoing rehabilitation.

In this course you will learn myofascial techniques, trigger point techniques, and deep soft tissue massage techniques. These techniques differ from other massage techniques, which offer mainly a generalised relaxation effect. The techniques introduced will be aimed at promoting recovery from muscle sprain or strain. These techniques will also assist in improving sports performance through improving body alignment and biomechanics and therefore prevent recurrent injuries and/or pain.

This course is appropriate for newly graduated physiotherapists, Pilates instructors, personal trainers, and massage therapists wanting to expand their skills in the area of myofascial therapy.

This program provides a comprehensive functional anatomy review in order to identify the underlying biomechanical causes of the pain syndromes that are treated most commonly by Physiotherapists.

The latest research on where pain comes from in soft tissue, on pain inhibition, and on the treatment of tendinitis and tendinopathies is covered. Soft tissue techniques of the spine, shoulder, and upper and lower limb are also covered.

Identifying postural and muscle imbalances and incorporating the appropriate stretches, stability and strengthening exercises, for both acute and chronic conditions is a key focus of the course.

This course was designed by Francine St George and has been run for over 20 years both nationally and internationally. It has continued to evolve and be updated to incorporate the relevant research on muscle interrelationship, fascia and pain.

There is both a theoretical and practical component to the course. It runs over 2 days and is taught in four sections.

Course Aims and Objectives

Aims:

To evaluate the interrelationship between pain, posture and soft tissues

To assess and treat postural and muscular imbalances using soft tissue techniques

To understand the concept of neurological inhibition and its influence on muscles and soft tissue and how specific exercise techniques can restore function

Objectives:

To understand the role and importance of connective tissue in the body and how it may cause pain

To review the physiological properties of soft tissue and identify the mechanisms whereby soft tissue can be altered using manual techniques

To assess posture; static, dynamic and functional

To review functional and integrated anatomy of the major muscle groups of the body and apply this to the upper limb, pelvis and spine and to the lower limb

To learn Soft Tissue Mobilisation Techniques (STMT) for the major muscle group

To establish how soon after injury STMT may be used

To learn how to incorporate STMT into current treatment regimes, including specific exercise prescription

To learn how to apply an integrated approach to treatment to identify muscular and postural imbalances to prevent recurrence of musculoskeletal conditions commonly seen in clinical practice

Course Content

This course consists of four sections taught in lecture and practical components. The course runs over 2 days.

Day 1

Soft Tissues and posture

Provides an overview of the physiology of soft tissues, their physiological response to injury, to abnormal biomechanical loading and explains the mechanisms by whereby soft tissues can be affected by manual therapy techniques. This section also presents a model of posture which can assist identifying muscle and postural imbalances.

Cervical spine/shoulder

Provides an anatomical overview for the upper limb; including the head, neck and shoulder. Clinical assessment for these regions using a posture and muscle imbalance approach is demonstrated. Soft tissue techniques and corrective exercise prescription for these regions are provided.

Day 2

Iliopsoas and Spine

Covers the trunk and spine. A brief anatomical overview for these regions is provided. Soft tissue techniques and innovative methods of corrective exercise prescription are also provided, considering the integration of the upper limb and lower limb. This approach also permits the patient to have an understanding of how to correct and manage their own muscle imbalances.

Lower Limb

The final section relates to the lower limb; an anatomy review is presented, clinical assessment of lower limb biomechanics and soft tissue techniques and exercise prescription is again covered.

About the Lecturer

Penny Elliott, M.H.Sc. (Orthopaedic Manipulative Therapy), Member AAOMT, B. App.Sc (Phty), Physiotherapist, Member of the Australian Physiotherapy Assoc.

Penny completed her qualifications in Physiotherapy at the University of Sydney in 1993 and completed her Masters of Health Science (Orthopaedic Manipulative Therapy) at Charles Sturt University, with Distinction, in 2006. The major focus of this Masters degree was on the work of Kaltenborn and Evjenth. Penny was co-founder of the Physiotherapy Posture and Fitness Clinic in 1999. She has been a Senior Associate of the clinic for the past 11 years.

With a personal background in dance, one of Penny’s main interests has been in movement analysis and postural assessment. In the past, she has worked with a variety of sports people at The Sports Clinic at Sydney University – including; the Sydney University Rugby team, Olympic level rowers, runners and triathletes. She uses this expertise in designing individual and small group exercise programs. Currently her work at the Physiotherapy Posture and Fitness clinic includes teaching Clinical Pilates in two fully equipped Pilate’s studios and the use of Real Time Ultrasound for specific rehabilitation of the deep trunk stabilisers.

Penny has spent several years on the development of a number of education programs for health professionals. This has included teaching the Posture, Soft tissue and Exercise course for physiotherapists; teaching and designing the sports massage programs at the NSW School of massage; and teaching personal trainers around Australia and in Singapore. Since having her own child 3 years ago, she has also been teaching pre and post natal exercise prescription.

Penny’s other areas of interest include lower limb analysis and biomechanical assessment, which has arisen from her work making orthotics with a well known Sydney podiatry group. Additionally, teaching posture at the University of Sydney’s School of Dentistry has encouraged her further study on the TMJ during her Master’s degree.

Penny’s hands on and exercise based approach to treatment means that patients can really understand their problem and take an active part in managing their own health and fitness. When not in the clinic, Penny will be found in all manner of activities, including Pilates, dancing, swimming, jogging, and yoga and
